Abstract

The intent of this study was to examine iconic notation and its application in teaching musical literacy skills in the elementary music classroom. Specific issues addressed include: defining iconic notation, identifying ways that students may represent and communicate their understanding, determining strategies for using iconic notation in the classroom, and recognizing ways music educators can better help children connect sound to symbol.
