As music educators, we are responsible for giving our students a balanced and sequential education in the field of music. The issue of teaching melodic literacy has been approached in a multitude of ways through varying philosophies of music education but the value of teaching literacy through any approach has remained constant through all. The purpose of this project was to explore the research of music literacy and focus on the development of a melodic curriculum through the Kodály Concept and the Orff Schulwerk Approach for grades Kindergarten through Fourth for the Howard-Suamico School District. It is up to the educator to assess the needs of their pupils and to tie in literacy to create a sequential, meaningful curriculum that will give students a positive and life-lasting music education.
