The university administers various loan programs for graduate students. These loans are available to students enrolled on a half-time basis or more. Half-time status at the graduate level is equivalent to three semester credits per term. Applicants must have a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file at the university. Early application is encouraged.
Subsidized Stafford loans are federally funded on a need basis and are available to U.S. citizens and eligible noncitizens who are not in default of any previous student loans.
Unsubsidized Stafford loans are federally funded on a non-need basis. To qualify, students must not be in default of any student loans.
SELF (Student Education Loan Fund) is funded by the state of Minnesota on a non-need basis. To qualify, students must not be in default of any student loans or delinquent on interest payments on an outstanding SELF loan. A student must apply with a credit-worthy cosigner.
Private Educational Loans are available from private lenders. These loans are approved based on the student's credit history and are not based on financial need. The FAFSA is not required to apply for these loans.
