The problem of this study was to investigate the impact the National Standards (NS) and assessment movement has had on general music teachers who teach grades one through four in the state of North Dakota. Specifically, the investigation addressed Standard 3 (improvising), Standard 4 (composing), and Standard 7 (evaluating music), and the activities and assessments through which North Dakota teachers implement the Standards to enable their students to reach mature, musical understanding.
