Preserving Hmong Music: A Collection of Songs

July 26, 2011 / By: Cynthia A. Pierce

As the music teacher at Hmong College Prep Academy it has been important to me to provide musical curricula to my students that they will find culturally relevant. This has been more difficult than I anticipated because of the limited availability of transcribed Hmong music. I have been transcribing Hmong music that my colleagues and students have taught me over the last five years. This project consisted of transcribing eight Hmong songs in lead sheet format and presenting them with English translations and background information so vocalists, instrumentalists and teachers can use them for performance and teaching. It is my hope that these lead sheets can be used by all people for the purpose of teaching and learning Hmong music and to keep the Hmong language and culture alive.
