Brass Warm-Ups

May 3, 2014 / By: Benjamin Hoehn

An important element is often missing from school ensemble rehearsals: warm-up for brass players. This paper details the importance of teaching young brass players effective warm-up exercises for use before rehearsals, lessons and practice sessions; including the real-life story of jazz trumpeter Freddie Hubbard as an example of what could happen if brass players neglect their embouchure. This paper provides one semester (twenty weeks) of brass warm-ups for use during five minutes starting rehearsal. Students will prepare for the rigors of ensemble rehearsal though breathing exercises; long tone studies; mouthpiece playing; articulation studies; and interval studies.
