This paper will seek to apply Peter Webster's Model of Creative Thinking Processes in Music to the large ensemble setting. Critical thinking and creative thinking are described in detail, and creativity within a large ensemble is explained. Webster's model is described as it applies to large ensembles; features of the model addressed include the intentions and products, the enabling skills and enabling conditions, and the creative thinking processes on both a macro and micro level. Practical implications for the conductor/teacher and rehearsal setting are outlined, and the model is applied to a unit study for a beginning band piece.
