A Survival Guide for First Year Elementary Music Teachers

February 1, 2004 / By: Barbara Elizabeth Wieland

The purpose of this project was to create a classroom management guide for first year elementary music specialists. The guide is designed to present practical ideas and resources to assist first year elementary music teachers in becoming effective classroom managers.

This project is divided into three parts. Part I is a discussion of related literature that defines and discusses classroom management and its components. Part II is the guide itself. It has five sections: (1) beginning of the year classroom management; (2) establishing a culture for learning; (3) managing student behavior; (4) rules and procedures; and (5) physical set up of the classroom. Each of five sections contains a list of practical ideas and resources that address skills and knowledge needed to assist first year elementary music teachers in becoming effective classroom managers. Part III is a discussion of professional responsibilities for the first year music teacher. A checklist, coordinated with the guide, is provided in an appendix.
