Since 1990, Graduate Programs in Music Education (GPME) within the UST College of Arts and Sciences has sponsored a summer seminar in which distinguished figures in music and arts education present their work to the community of music educators in the Twin Cities metro area. The 2012 distinguished scholar-artist is Frank Abrahams, Professor of Music Education, Westminster Choir College of Rider University, Princeton, NJ.

Frank Abrahams has pioneered the development of a critical pedagogy for music education. This new teaching model encourages music teachers and ensemble conductors to adapt instruction and rehearsal technique to address individual differences in learning styles and empowers students to be musicians. His lessons form the foundation for the general curriculum at Westminster Academy, the laboratory school of the Music Education Department and Westminster Conservatory, and his pedagogical ideas provide the framework for Westminster's undergraduate and graduate music education curricula.
