The Fundamentals of Jazz Musicianship

About the Ensemble

This course is designed to give the student a working knowledge of the skills required for jazz performance and research of performance practice.  Study will include rhythm (how to swing); melody (how to jazz it up); harmony (how to jazz it up part 2).  All styles of jazz will be examined, beginning with blues, modal tunes and the study of jazz standards.  A systematic approach to the art of improvisation with emphasis placed on ear training exercises, in-class improvisation and performance.  This course is open to all instrumentalists and singers.  Offered most fall semesters.
