We contend that shoring up the educational
infrastructure for Catholic teachers and
administrators goes a long way toward building a common Catholic
culture in the Archdiocese.

In their collaboration, the University of St. Thomas and the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis have shown the way by creating the Murray Institute.

With the decline in the numbers of ordained ministers and vowed religious, there has been a parallel decline in formative and supportive systems in Catholic education. The need to develop a pool of educators deeply formed in their Catholic faith is essential if the Archdiocese is to maintain the clearly Catholic identity of its schools and parish programs.

Over its thirteen years, the Murray Institute’s collaborative efforts have demonstrated the ability to meet faith formation needs of educators and to significantly influence the quality of catechesis in the Archdiocese.

It has successfully brought nearly 500 educators through both degree and non-degree programs with no tuition cost to the educators. These programs have been targeted to the needs of the Archdiocese in such areas as Leadership, Administration, Curriculum, Special Needs and the Social Teachings of the Church.
