Placement Test

Placement Test

  • Language Placement tests can only be taken ONCE for the same language.
  • Students bringing in college credit (College in the Schools, AP) should NOT take the placement test; they should take the next level for which they received credit. 
  • Students bringing in International Baccalaurete (IB) scores SHOULD take the placement test to determine their level of competency; they will receive academic credit for the level(s) below where they placed.
  • There is no academic credit received for levels of a language by-passed by the placement.

FRENCH, GERMAN, LATIN, SPANISH

The French, German, Latin and Spanish placement tests can be taken in the MCL office, OEC 337, on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 11:30am - 1:30pm.  The placement test should be scheduled at least 24 hours prior to taking the exam by contacting the Administrative Assistant, Pat Reinhardt; email at pareinhardt@stthomas.edu or phone 651-962-5150. When scheduling the placement test, you will need to provide your UST ID#.

The German, Latin and Spanish placement tests consist of approximately 70 multiple choice questions with an hour time limit. The French placement test, which includes a listening section, consists of 99 multiple choice questions with a time limit of 1 hour 15 minutes.

All 4 language placement tests will be taken online in the Language Lab.  As soon as students answer the last question on the exam they will immediately know the level into which they placed, and will be able to register.

ARABIC, GREEK, IRISH GAELIC, JAPANESE

The Arabic, Greek, Irish Gaelic and Japanese placement tests should be scheduled with the section coordinator:
