Majors and minor in German

Major in German

The major in German requires:

  1. The completion of elementary German 1 and 2, intermediate German 1 and 2 (or the equivalent in a high school program).
  2. The completion of Germ 300, Introduction to German Studies
  3. Six additional courses in German including at least two courses in German literature
  4. One course in European history.

*Courses gained in approved exchange programs in Germany, Austria or Switzerland may be applied to the major.

Minor in German

The minor in German requires:

  1. The completion of elementary German 1 and 2, intermediate German 1 and 2 (or the equivalent in a high school program).
  2. The completion of Germ 300, Introduction to German Studies
  3. Three additional courses in German including at least on courses in German literature

Major in International Business, German Intensive

The major in International Business with a focus on German requires:

  1. The completion of elementary German 1 and 2, intermediate German 1 and 2 (or the equivalent in a high school program).
  2. The completion of Germ 300, Introduction to German Studies and Germ 440, Business German.
  3. The completion of five additional courses in German numbered above Germ 300.
  4. The completion of five courses in Business Administration.
  5. Econ 251, 252, 348
  6. Computer Science 110
  7. One mathematics course chosen from Math 101, 111, or 113

German Major: K - 12 Teacher Certification Teacher certification

 The major in German with k-12 teacher certification requires:

  1. The completion of elementary German 1 and 2, intermediate German 1 and 2 (or the equivalent in a high school program).
  2. The completion of Germ 300, Introduction to German Studies and Germ 440, Business German.
  3. The completion of five additional courses in German numbered above Germ 300.  Of those courses 6 credits must be in oral and written German, 6 credits in German culture and civilization, 6 credits in German literature.
  4. One course in European history.
  5. Courses in professional education and proficiency certification as specified by the State of Minnesota.  Check with the Department of Teacher Education for details.

German component of the International Studies Major

  1. The International Studies major is administered by the Department of Political Science.
  2. The German component of the International Studies major requires:
  3. The completion of elementary German 1 and 2, intermediate German 1 and 2 (or the equivalent in a high school program).
  4. The completion of Germ 300, Introduction to German Studies.
  5. The completion of one additional German course numbered above 300.
