Khalek The first year of elementary Arabic is designed for non-native beginners in the arabic language to primarily learn the formal form of Arabic also known as Modern Standard Arabic. During the year, students will learn how to express basic communication idioms and needs in Arabic. The year begins with learning the alphabet and progresses into learning how to read elementary level Arabic, writing simple sentances, and speaking basic and introductory idioms. Listening drills and exercises are also practiced in class and in the language lab.

CRN: 40538 4 Credit Hours Instructor: Hisham A. Khalek Intermediate Arabic I is a continuation of Elementary Arabic II. It is designed to further develop language proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic in the four language skills. In speaking, the focus is on the use of everyday expressions through discussion and presentations. In reading, the focus is on reading authentic materials from Arabic journals and homework assignments. Listening exercises and drills are utilized in class as well as in the language lab by listening and watching audio and video materials. The course is also aimed at familiarizing students with the cultures of Arab world.

CRN: 42906 4 Credit Hours Instructor: Susanne M. Wagner Almost 70 years after the end of WWII, the Holocaust still engenders public debate and political decisions. The course will focus on the cultural responses to the Holocaust in the form of poetry, prose, diaries, memoirs, and films. By incorporating different kinds of texts, the course will encourage you to develop new ways of approaching a topic in an interdisciplinary manner. A comparison between Holocaust testimonies, historiographical writing and the fictional rendering of analogous motifs will complement the readings and highlight key issues in the way the Holocaust has been and continues to be discussed, debated, and remembered. Our sources include contemporary mass media, memoirs, films, works of fiction, and scholarly books. Prerequisite: GERM 300
