From the Undergraduate Academic Catalogue:

A major or minor concentration in Russian
St. Thomas currently offers the first two levels of Russian language instruction. You may complete the requirements of a major or minor in Russian through an agreement with nearby Macalester College, while remaining a St. Thomas student. After your third year in the program, you may opt to for a semester or full year of study in Russia. Opportunities for internships in Russia continue to become more available.

Russian is the language of 280,000,000 people
of the largest nation earth and possesses tremendous resources and great potential for development.  In addition the language is spoken in a number of former republics of the Soviet Union in eastern Europe and Northern Asia.  A degree in Russian will provide you with the opportunity to learn the basics of the Russian language for reading and communicating in everyday situations. With your language skills, you also will have the opportunity to acquire a basic knowledge of the culture of the people, both at home and abroad, for use in careers in business, government work, teaching, literacy or linguistic studies.

With a degree in Russian,
your career opportunities still include traditional careers in literary, cultural, teaching, translating, government and military areas; however, opportunities have expanded to include nearly every field, especially business. Doctors, scientists, engineers, journalists, diplomats and missionaries also may find knowledge of Russian to be a positive factor in future employment. You may choose to pair your Russian degree with studies in international business, international relations, history, political science, economics, journalism, justice and peace studies, or another language.
