About Michael Dougherty

Michael Dougherty became the vice chancellor for advancement at the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities in December 2011. Previously, he was vice president of communications at The Valspar Corporation and president of The Valspar Foundation. He also held a variety of positions at 3M, including director of global communications and investor relations counselor, and managing director of the company’s subsidiary in Sweden. Prior to 3M, he served as vice president of policy and legislation and vice president of operations at the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce, was acting deputy assistant secretary for legislation at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and manager of government relations at the Pillsbury Company. Dougherty holds a bachelor's degree in speech communications and a master's degree in public affairs from the University of Minnesota and an MBA from the University of St. Thomas.
