About Deborah Ashton, PhD

Dr. Ashton, Vice President, Chief Diversity Officer of Novant Health, has over 20 years of cross-industry experience in diversity and inclusion, including global Fortune 500 organizations. Dr. Ashton is the former Director of Diversity at Medtronic and Harley-Davidson; Sr. Director of Diversity at Darden Restaurants; and headed diversity at Argonne National Laboratory. She is a strategist and coach.

Dr. Ashton developed the Six Pillars of Diversity and InclusionTM, a strategy that uses diversity and inclusion to work collaboratively across functions and strengthen the organization. Her strategy assisted Novant Health to be listed on Diversity MBA 2013 "50 Out Front: Best Places for Diverse & Women Managers To Work".

 At Darden Restaurants, Dr. Ashton developed a multi-tiered diversity training recognized nationally by DiversityInc. She is a licensed psychologist and is certified in LaMarsh Master of Managed Change™.
Her post-doctoral internship was at Harvard Medical School. She earned her Ph.D. in clinical psychology and public practice from Harvard University-- specialization in organizational and clinical psychology. Her B.A. in psychology with honors is from Clarke College.  Dr. Ashton has published diversity strategy articles and has presented at international conferences from Mexico to Australia. She was listed in Who's Who in the World.
