A Word from Vice President Canney Career Corner Additional Loan Options for Financing a St. Thomas Education Alumni Update Dates to Remember
Dear Parents, Guardians and Friends,
Summer is in full swing! We miss your students and the campus is a little less exciting without them. However, during this time we are redesigning some spaces on campus including the installation of a fountain on the John P. Monahan Plaza and the remodeling of the Murray Herrick Center which will offer combined student services and new classrooms. These projects are all a part of a continuing effort to offer students a stimulating environment which meets their needs both inside and outside the classroom.
We are welcoming our new class of 2016 in July during Orientation and Registration; and we look forward to seeing your students when they return for another academic year. Be sure to mark your calendar for Family Weekend, October 5-7, 2012.
Have a wonderful summer!
Sincerely,
Jane Canney, Career Corner Your student can make the most of the summer months while away from St. Thomas. The school year is packed with classes, club involvement, employment and homework. The time away from school provides an opportunity to explore major fields, research career options, arrange meetings to interview or shadow professionals in the work place and develop experience through employment or volunteering. As students progress through their years at St. Thomas, it is important that they begin to build a resume and establish a network to aide them in their readiness for an internship and job upon graduation. Encourage your student to move their career direction to the next level. Ideas for resources and services available can be found on the Career Development Center’s website. Appointments and Pop-In hours are available throughout the summer by calling 651-962-6761.
If your student is seeking part-time or full-time employment or internship opportunities remind them to use Tommie Careers, the employment postings for UST students and alumni. They can log on with their UST student account information. Currently there are more than 1040 positions listed.
Additional Loan Options for Financing a St. Thomas Education June is a great time to begin researching educational financing options for the upcoming academic year, but first you need to assess your financial needs. Your student won't receive their billing statement for fall semester until late August. However, we have developed an interactive cost estimator to help you and your student calculate any potential amount to finance after financial aid has been applied to applicable charges. To get started, go to http://www.stthomas.edu/financialaid/undergraduate/cost/estimator/default.html.
There are two categories of education loans that may be used to supplement your financial aid package; private educational loans and the Federal Direct Parent PLUS Loan, a federal loan program available to parents of dependent students. The decision of whether or not to borrow additional loans and which program to use is a difficult one for some families. The Undergraduate Financial Aid Office encourages families to consider the differences between the Federal Direct Parent PLUS Loan and other private educational loans by visiting our website, www.stthomas.edu/financialaid/undergraduate/loans/alternative/default.html
