Toward the end of summer and early fall there are many great learning and social opportunities available at the law school for alumni and friends. A full listing of CLEs, seminars, and social events are provided in the CLE and Events listing contained in this month’s e-news, but I’d like to highlight a few that are coming up in August and September.
As you know, the law school is celebrating its 10th Anniversary this year. On September 20 the law school will host a reception at the law school to celebrate this milestone. You should already have received a "save the date" postcard, and should receive an invitation in August. I look forward to seeing many alumni and friends at this wonderful event.
This summer many departments are busy planning early fall CLE offerings for alumni and friends of the law school. In August there is a free CLE on “Managing Education Debt for Public Interest Attorneys.” In September there is a free CLE on “Negotiating and Litigating International Child Abduction Cases,” as well as a Holloran Center lecture on “Liberal Learning and the Business Major: The Challenge of Reciprocal Integration.”
There are also social opportunities for alumni and friends. Alicia Long (’10) and Michael Lawyer (’09) have organized a Happy Hour in Washington, D.C. on July 7 at Fado’s Irish Pub. In August alumni will gather for the Twins vs. Yankees game on August 18. There are still tickets available at a cost of $30. The ticket sales for this event will close on July 10. There will also be the Annual Alumni Golf Outing on September 19 at the Bluff Creek Golf Course. The registration fee for this event is $55, but there is a $10 discount for registrations received by June 30.
There are more great events coming up, so stay tuned! If you have any ideas or suggestions for CLEs or events, please let me know.

Brodin Named Director of Career and Professional Development
Dean Thomas M. Mengler has announced that Kendra Brodin has been named the Director of Career and Professional Development for the University of St. Thomas School of Law as of June 27. Brodin has extensive experience working with attorneys and law firms in professional development areas such as work/life balance, career satisfaction, leadership, conflict resolution, and time and stress management through individual coaching, law firm consulting, and a variety of Continuing Legal Education courses. In addition, Brodin has continued to practice law with a focus on litigation and civil mediation.
Brodin also has previous experience directing a local non-profit and is a committee chair for both the Minnesota State Bar Association and Minnesota Women Lawyers. She is a regular contributor to Lawyerist.com and blogs on professional development issues.
Brodin holds a master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Pennsylvania and a law degree with honors from the University of Minnesota, as well as coaching instruction from The Institute for Life Coach Training. She is a qualified neutral under Minnesota Rule 114.
Assistant Dean of Students Dave Bateson said, “Kendra’s experiences make her keenly aware of the skills new lawyers need to successfully transition from student to attorney as well as what employers are looking for from the attorneys they hire. She has strong local and national networks that will benefit our students.”

Mobile Applications For Lawyers
On June 19 UST Law Library staff presented a CLE on Free/Low Cost Legal Research and Current Awareness Resources. As part of the presentation, UST Law School Director of Technology Don Zhou presented on "Mobile Applications for Lawyers." Zhou's PowerPoint presentation about useful applications for you and your practice is available here. In addition, the library staff's handouts containing useful free and low-cost research tools are available here.
