In this issue: Message from 2013 UST Law Alumni Board President 2008 graduate Laura Hammargren I’m very honored and excited to serve as Alumni Board President during this year, the five-year anniversary of the Class of 2008’s law school graduation. I joined the Alumni Board in 2009 because I appreciated the opportunities UST Law afforded me, and wanted to try and give something back. I wanted to be President because one of my favorite parts of UST Law was that it offered such an incredible opportunity to be a part of the formative process for a new school, and I thought that echoed the Alumni Board’s position as a relatively new group. In thinking about my goals for the Alumni Board, I could not help but think of my own professional goals for the coming year, which I’m sure reflect many of my fellow alumni. For many, if not all, of us, we are starting to focus on raising our profiles, whether that be in our workplace, in our community, or even the legal profession as a whole. We are also looking to form, sustain and maintain relationships, which not only helps us achieve that first goal of visibility, but also gives us a support system for challenging times. These are also challenging times in legal education. I hope that the Alumni Board, along with fellow alumni, can be a support system for UST Law through thoughtful advice and recognition that the need for financial support is critical to the success of our law school. I would like to see the Alumni Board and fellow alumni establish a sustaining relationship with the law school by signing up for an annual reoccurring gift to the law school during this year’s campaign. This type of relationship by alumni is essential to the law school’s long-term success. As alumni it is vital that we support one another, as well as the students at UST Law. I encourage all of you to consider joining one of the Alumni Association’s committees, each of which promotes the mission of UST Law and heightens the visibility of UST Law and fellow alumni. Alumni Association committees include the Alumni Program Committee, Alumni Social Committee, Class of 2008 Reunion Committee, Annual Giving Committee, and the Alumnae Event Committee. Membership is open to any graduate who expresses an interest. If you would like to become more involved you can contact me or Nicole Fredricks Jackson (nfjackson@stthomas.edu) to learn more. Again, it is an honor and privilege to serve as your Alumni Board President this year, and I hope to catch up with many of you over the coming months. Sincerely, Laura Hammargren Create a Sustaining Relationship with UST Law A sustaining relationship allows a donor to demonstrate support for UST Law and its mission over a longer period of time. Participation continues automatically on a monthly or yearly basis. Donors who enter into a sustaining relationship will be removed from all other annual giving solicitations, including phone calls in spring and early summer. Sustaining relationship members can increase, decrease or cancel a monthly or yearly gift at any time. To create a sustaining relationship, complete the Sustaining Relationship form today. Mail the completed form to Development Office, University of St. Thomas, P.O. Box 64947, Saint Paul, MN 55164-0947. You may also complete the form over the telephone by contacting the UST Development Office at (651) 962-6999 or (800) 328-6819, Ext. 2-6999. The Alumni Office is now on Twitter at USTLawAlumni. We will post news and events relevant to our law alumni. Follow us today to stay connected! UST’s Lawyer Search is an innovative program for both law alumni and the public. Mission in Action – Call for Submissions This year the UST Law Alumni Relations Office began a Life at UST Law blog titled “Mission in Action.” The blog features posts written by UST Law alumni in which they answer the question: What is your Mission in action? Our first two alumni bloggers are Carrie Burton ’08 and Johanna Clyborne ’05: If you are willing to share your Mission in Action story, please submit a statement (500 words or less) to lawalumni@stthomas.edu.
