The Department of Mathematics is a diverse group of academics, focused on undergraduate mathematics education and research. Whether you are a non-major looking to fulfill a requirement, a major looking for a comprehensive experience or you just want to learn more mathematics…there is place for you in our department. We offer a wide variety of courses in pure mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics and actuarial science.
HELP AND SUPPORT
No matter your level of experience with mathematics we can offer you more. The Mathematics Resource Center (MaRC) supports student learning through free drop-in peer tutoring and is open from 9am-9pm most days. Our tutors are tested and trained and are among the best tutors on campus – they know their stuff!
Our professors all offer open office hours and are very willing to offer assistance and one-on-one instruction. We want your learning experience to extend far beyond the classroom and we’re here to support that.
The Center for Applied Mathematics (CAM) is housed in the Department of Mathematics and offers an array of student research opportunities. These opportunities include intensive summer research projects, conference presentations, faculty collaboration and real-life industry experiences.
This type of research opportunity at an undergraduate level is truly unique and prepares our students for rigorous meaningful work. In addition to undergraduate research accomplishments, our students go on to excel as graduate students and as employees in a variety of fields.
CENTER OF ACTUARIAL EXCELLENCE
We are the ONLY program in the state of Minnesota to be named as a Center of Actuarial Excellence by the Society of Actuaries. To achieve this a program must meet specific requirements related to degree, curriculum, graduate count, faculty composition, graduate quality, appropriate integration, connection to industry, and research/scholarship.
