2016 UST Distinguished Educator Award

Prof. Cheri Shakiban, mathematics department, was given The Distinguished Educator Award by the St. Thomas Undergraduate Student Government this spring.

Prof. Shakiban was nominated by math student Ryan Slechta. On the nomination form, Ryan listed several examples of student support and commitment to students - including helping women and minorities succeed. She has supervised research projects and published papers with many of her students and her commitment to seeing students succeed is tireless and unwavering. Prof. Shakiban has also served as the Associate Director for Diversity at the University of Minnesota's Institute for Mathematics and it's Applications. She used her position to help St. Thomas students, and especially women and minorities, to get a foothold in the wider mathematical community.
