The University of St. Thomas

Mathematics Resource Center

The Mathematics Resource Center (MaRC) in O'Shaughnessy Science Center 235 supports student learning in mathematics through free drop-in peer tutoring as a service of the UST Mathematics Department for any ACTC student taking MATH 100 through 200.

Solution manuals for all supported mathematics courses are available for use with the deposit of a UST student ID card.   Group study areas, wireless connectivity and extra learning sessions are other features of the MaRC.

The MaRC is also headquarters for Math Placement Exam preparation, questions and administration.

AWARD WINNING!!!

The Mathematics Resource Center's Fall Academy Project received the Diversity Leadership Award for an Academic or Service Unit. The award recognizes a campus unit for implementing an exceptional diversity program benefiting the entire university community or a targeted population.

FAP, piloted Fall 2008, was an opportunity for participants in the Division of Sciences and Mathematics' Summer Academy program – students of color, women, asylees and permanent residents interested in science, technology, engineering and math – to continue their transitions to college-level academic work.

FAP, supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation's STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) Project, gives students learning opportunities consistent with their cultural and individual needs. Small groups of students worked in St. Thomas' Mathematics Resource Center to become successful independent learners.

Paul Nyombi

Paul Nyombi, a sophomore computer science and electrical engineering student from Uganda who tutors in the center, was recognized for his "exceptional effort to make the Fall Academy Project a success," creating a welcoming and accessible environment for learning mathematics.

Nyombi, who had considerable tutoring experience in high school and middle school, also worked with Summer Academy students. His nominator noted his consistent support of students in this program; he helped them succeed, encouraging and pushing them to learn independently.

Dr. Brenda Tiefenbruck

Dr. Brenda Tiefenbruck, in her fifth year as the Math Resource Center's director, was singled out for her recruitment of women, international students and students of color for tutoring positions in MaRC and for applying for the NSF grant that enabled FAP's creation.

"As a student tutor in MaRC, I know firsthand that Ms. Tiefenbruck is acutely aware of the challenges many students face when learning mathematics," her nominator wrote. "She understands that it is often not the math content but the climate of learning that may be difficult for students."
