The Life/Work Center offers counseling and therapy services for the University of St.Thomas community on the Minneapolis Campus. We offer a full range of psychological services for students and limited services for faculty and staff.
At times, we all can experience life as difficult or overwhelming. Personal and academic stress, relationship concerns, and transitions all can interfere with our personal and academic success. Personal counseling through the Life/Work Center offers an opportunity to talk with a licensed psychologist who can help you to identify and achieve goals for change and personal development. We strive to provide services that will enable you to succeed academically, personally, and in all areas of your life.
Within a given day, there are various times available for appointments. An appointment can usually be set up within a week of calling our center. If it is an emergency, individuals may be seen on the same day by walking into the center.
Clients are asked to come in a few minutes early for their initial intake appointment to fill out basic informational forms and then meet with their counselor. The counselor and the client discuss counseling options in this first intake appointment and decisions are made regarding the next steps for the client to pursue. These steps may include: counseling at the Life / Work Center, a medical evaluation referral, a referral to a community mental health center or practitioner, or in emergency cases, a determination that the client should be sent to the emergency room at a local hospital for further evaluation.
The counselors at the Life / Work Center are under ethical and legal obligations not to release confidential information. We cannot tell anyone about clients who are receiving counseling services. Counselors adhere strictly to confidentiality laws for their profession and can only break confidentiality if the client gives direct written permission. One exception, in the case of potential danger to self or others, involves breaking confidentiality of the client without permission so that the client or others are protected.
