Brian joined the Life/Work Center in 2001, coming from the St. Paul campus of the University after 22 years of service in Student Affairs. He earned his B.A. and M.A (Guidance and Counseling) degrees from Eastern Michigan University, and is originally from Michigan. As Director, Brian is responsible for the overall management of the Center, guiding outreach to the various graduate, professional, and adult student programs on the Minneapolis campus, and developing and evaluating new student service initiatives. He has other responsibilities within the University which are designed to benefit the broader goals of developing services for both undergraduate and graduate students. His professional interests include assessment and evaluation, financial resources development, designing effective communication patterns, organizational development, and student services identification. He wants to hear from students, faculty and staff about what their student service issues are and how the university can assist them.

Counseling Services

 

Timothy J. Beyer, Ph.D.

Tim brings a broad based background to his work as a counseling psychologist with the Life / Work Center. He earned a bachelor's of business administration in management at the University of North Dakota and worked in banking for nine years prior to training in the area of psychology. He studied educational psychology in the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Minnesota, earning both a master's and a doctorate degree. Tim's therapeutic approach with clients integrates developmental, psychodynamic, and cognitive theories; he provides short-term, goal-oriented therapy. Tim is also available for consultation and for outreach. His professional interests include moral development, assessment, counselor training and supervision, and wellness.

Vanessa R. Rempel

Vanessa holds a Doctoral degree in Counseling Psychology and a Masters degree in Counseling, both from the University of North Dakota. Before joing the Life/Work Center staff she completed a pre-doctoral internship at the Personal Counseling and Testing Center on the St. Paul UST campus. In addition to her work experience with university counseling centers, Vanessa has also provided mental health services in a variety of community agency settings. In her therapeutic work Vanessa operates from an integrative stance, drawing upon theory and techniques ranging from Interpersonal and Existential to Cognitive-Behavioral. Vanessa works collaboratively with clients to find the therapeutic course most effective for their unique situation. Her professional interests include: performance anxiety, existential concerns, developing healthy interpersonal relationships, and attaining/maintaining a healthy work/life/school balance. She is available for consultation and outreach.

Financial Aid Office Staff

Chad joined St. Thomas in 1997 and throughout these years has worked in various positions within the Office of Student Financial Services. Prior to joining St. Thomas, Chad worked at a student loan processor. He earned his Bachelors Degree in Psychology with a minor in Management from Moorhead State University and recently received his Master of Arts in Educational Leadership-Student Affairs from the University of St. Thomas. He is currently the Associate Director of Financial Aid for Graduate and Law students and his primary roles are to supervise the Graduate Student Financial Services Office, provide financial aid counseling to graduate and Law students and make sure that St. Thomas is in compliance with respect to federal and institutional financial aid programs.

Allison Schmit

Allison came to St. Thomas in 2007, bringing with her over 10 years of experience in the financial aid field.  Allison began her career in financial aid in 1992 as a work-study student at the University of Wisconsin - Madison.  After graduation, she spent two years in the Financial Aid Office at Edgewood College in Madison, before moving on to DePaul University in Chicago.  While at DePaul, Allison spent five years in the Graduate Financial Aid Office and earned her Masters Degree in Education.  She recently relocated to the Twin Cities, joining St. Thomas where one of her many roles is to counsel students in the graduate and law programs.

David joined the University in 2000 as an administrative specialist in the Office of Student Financial Services. Before joining the Graduate Student Financial Services Staff he spent four years working primarily with undergraduate students and their parents. David comes with a significant background in the banking industry spending over 15 years in consumer banking and an additional eight years with The Federal Reserve Bank. David's knowledge and confidence comes from his extensive experience in working with people and their financial needs and the students he serves are provided with a professional approach to their individual situations. He is well aware of the commitment and dedication needed to complete a degree as David is a 2005 graduate of the University of St. Thomas earning his B.A. in Business Administration.

Denae holds a Master of Arts in Theology from St. John's School of Theology-Seminary in Collegeville, MN.  She has worked in Campus Ministry since July 2005.  As the Campus Minister for student outreach, Denae serves UST students by helping them connect to faith-based resources on and off campus and supporting students in creating and maintaining faith-based initiatives on campus.  Denae also coordinates the Campus Ministry retreat offerings and supervises Common Ground, the Campus Ministry Student House.  Her office is located in MHC 105, and she is available to meet with members of the UST community by calling

Sr. Sharon Howell, CSJ, is the Assistant Dean of Student Life and Ombudsperson . The Wellness Center is dedicated to assisting students, staff, and faculty in developing healthy life style choices and promoting behaviors that result in enhanced well-being. As Director of OISS, I am pleased to extend a special welcome to all new International Students. My international experiences have taken me to amazing and interesting places around the world. I have studied abroad in Bulgaria, lived in Japan, and traveled throughout Western and Eastern Europe, Middle East, and Asia. The Liberal Arts tradition at the University of St. Thomas sets the stage for International Students to interact with the campus in academic, social and cultural settings. I encourage all International Students to take advantage of the opportunities that are available on the UST campus and in the St. Paul / Minneapolis area.
