Luxembourg Parish/Civil Records

Introduction

The vital records of Luxembourg, 1600-1890, were created and maintained by village and district Catholic parishes and by civil authorities. These records include baptisms, births, burials, confirmations, conversions, deaths, and marriages, for example. During the Napoleonic era, an alternate calendar and system of records description were used.

These records, with partial or periodic indices, exist on microfilm and are available to researchers at all Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints ("Mormon") Family History Centers, at the Department of Special Collections of the O'Shaughnessy-Frey Library, St. Paul, Minnesota, as well as the Archives Nationales de Luxembourg and the Erzbischoflisches Ordinariat Luxemburg.

The University of St. Thomas has created two searchable databases, Luxembourg Parish/Civil Records, 1600-1890 and Tables Decennales, 1853-1863 to make these records accessible to the research community. Online searches cannot retrieve original documents; they will, however, indicate the pertinent roll(s) of LDS microfilm on which records can be found.  The "Tables Decennales" initially are indexed by family name; the "Parish/Civil" Records, by parish/village. Researchers are encouraged to consult both databases. Search instructions are provided for each database.

These databases initially were developed using the May 1994 "Locality Catalog" for Luxembourg records published by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Microfilm roll numbers for certain localities have changed in the meantime. Please consult your LDS Family History Library for a comparative list of old and new microfilm numbers.

The staff of the Special Collections Department at UST is available to assist your research, by electronic mail (amkenne1@stthomas.edu), regular post (Mail 5004, University of St. Thomas, 2115 Summit Ave. St, Paul, MN 55105-1096), or phone (651-962-5467). One (1), one-hour (1-hour) search will be undertaken by Department staff for a fee of $15.00. Researchers will be referred to Twin Cities genealogists for extended searches; please request details at the above addresses. Researchers are encouraged to use the databases to refine their search before contacting the UST staff.
