-
Select References/Add New Reference from the toolbar.
-
Under View fields used by a particular output style, select a style from the dropdown menu.
Fields with a checkmark are recommended fields -- mouse over or click on any checkmark to view style-specific notes at the bottom of the page. Your reference may not have information for all fields -- and the recommended fields are not required in order to save the record.
-
Under In Folders, select the folder or folders where you want to store your reference.
If you do not select a folder, the reference will be placed in your main database and considered unfiled. It can still accessed by searching, by clicking on the link in the Organize Folders area that indicates how many unfiled records you have, or by selecting Folders/View/References Not in a Folder from the toolbar.
-
Under Ref Type, select the type of material you want to cite (e.g. Book, Journal).
Each reference type has assigned fields (e.g., Author, Periodical name) that are appropriate for that particular type. When you select a reference type, the remaining fields change. Fields that are assigned to the selected Ref Type appear at the top of the list in black type. Fields that are not assigned to the selected RefType appear at the bottom of the list in light gray. These fields are optional.
-
Under Source Type, select Print or Electronic.
The source type tells the output style which fields of data to use in your bibliography.

When you've finished entering information, click Save Reference to complete your entry.
