5-1-07  Several Technical Services library staff from UST Libraries honored at CLIC luncheon!

At the CLIC recognition luncheon, held April 26, 2007, at the Como Conservatory, several UST Libraries staff were honored for their work for the consortium.  The "Group Effectiveness" Award went to the group which worked on the MAT type scoping, many of whom were from the UST Libraries:  Betsy Polakowski, Jane Shriver, Cathy Lutz, Paddy Satzer, and Linda Hulbert.  Jane and Cathy were especially singled out for their contributions to this effort.

Betsy was honored again when she received the "User Service" Award for her work in resolving the location display problem that resulted from the OPAC upgrade.  When she walked to the podium to receive her award, the hall was filled with whoops and bravos and "I don't think they were all coming from me and the other UST staff who were present," said Dan Gjelten, Director of UST Libraries.

5-1-07  Congratulations to Ann Kenne, Head of Special Collections and University Archivist, for winning Pepsi dollars from Student Life.

UST Libraries were awarded $1475 to fund the first phase of a project to digitize and provide a searchable online access to all past issues of the Aquin (1933 to present) and its predecessors the Purple and Gray (1912 - 1933) and the St. Thomas Collegian (1905 - 1909).

This process will provide students, faculty, staff and alumni easy access through the web to the content of the newspaper issues.  The information contained in the newspapers can be used for a variety of research purposes relating to the history of the University of St. Thomas.

An added benefit of this project will be the protection of the original issues.  The originals are very often damaged when handled because of the deteriorating paper on which they are printed.

You can see examples of such projects undertaken by other colleges.  In the initial round, over 2100 pages from the Aquin dating from 1933-1945 will be digitized and run through the OCR (optical character recognition - a software program to make print machine searchable) process.  The UST Libraries will subsidize the initial set-up cost for this project as well as the ongoing fees associated with maintaining this digital collection.

This is a great first step to completely digitizing the Aquins and an opportunity to gain some experience in the process.  The UST Libraries will be working with the Minnesota firm ColorMax out of Paynesville --  they've done the same work for several MN colleges, including Carleton, St. Catherine, Concordia, and others.

10/12/06 Learn about the Reference Department Everybody knows that there is a ton of "stuff" on the free Web that passes for research resources, and hopefully many people are aware that much of this "stuff" is, at best, inconsistent in quality and verifiability. For this and many other reasons, UST Libraries would like to take a little bit of time to remind everybody that the three libraries on both campuses are not only terrific places to meet and to use computers, but they all provide excellent reference resources and services to the UST community. more
10/05/06 Learn about the Special Collections Department The Special Collections Department at the O'Shaughnessy-Frey Library Center houses the University of St. Thomas Libraries' collection of rare books and manuscripts as well as the university archives. These materials are housed in a secure, climate-controlled environment because of their rarity or their inclusion in a special collection. While the materials are treated with special care, these resources are available for use to all faculty, students and interested researchers. more

10/02/06 October is Theological Libraries Month!
The American Theological Libraries Association (ATLA) and Archbishop Ireland Memorial Library, the graduate theology library of the University and Saint Paul Seminary, mark the first
observation, highlighting the importance of theological libraries in life of schools and seminaries.

"It's a common belief that any day now, online resources will replace the library," says Dennis A. Norlin, ATLA executive director. "It's simply not happening."

Instead, like all library directors, those at theological libraries are being called upon to play a pivotal role. They must navigate today's expensive balancing act of preserving and making accessible valuable resources.  "The decisions theological librarians make about allocating budgets,  formats, technology, and preservation all have a direct impact on the teaching and research that takes place at their institutions," says Norlin. "If anything, theological libraries are becoming more rather than less important to their institutions."

OSF is now the home of a new Topaz desktop magnifier - an easy-to-use machine for enlarging printed type, pictures, handwriting and other small details needed by those with visual impairments.  It is not a computer, there are no printing or scanning capabilities, only magnification.  The Topaz magnifier has been installed on the table with the assistive technology workstation on OSF level one (west side).
