Below are some of the image repositories available to you as a St. Thomas student, followed by a number of free collections.

  • Academic Search Premier: Image Collection. (thousands of current and historic photographs and other images of people, place and natural science topics. The word "More" is on the menu bar. Pull down that menu and select "Images."
  • Bridgeman Art Library Archives. (online access to masterpieces of national museums to private collections, includes eight thousand collections)
  • Dictionary of National Biography. (50,000 portraits in all media in this British biography source)
  • JSTOR Images (Provides access to articles which include images)
  • Oxford Art Online. (5,500 images and links to others)
  • St. Thomas Art History Department Visual Resources Library Collection.

    About the Collection

    The Visual Resources Library collection consists of over 65,000 art and architecture slides of varied mediums and geographic areas from prehistoric time to the 21st century. .

    The collection is developed in response to departmental curricular needs and is utilized by Art History staff and students; however, other faculty and students are welcome to make use of the collection. Plans are underway to digitize the collection and make the catalog available for searching via the Web.

    General Information

    The Visual Resources Library is located at 2057 Portland Avenue in the Department of Art History house.

    Hours of Operation: Monday - Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Fridays 8:00 a.m. to noon. Because the VRL is operated by one full-time professional and work-study students, there are times it may be closed during posted hours. It is recommended that patrons outside the Art History department call ahead to confirm availability.
