Eamonn O'Toole (1883 - 1956) Papers



Biography: 

Eamonn O'Toole was born in 1883.   He received his BA in Celtic Studies at  University College, Dublin and his MA from the National University of Ireland in 1914.  He served on the staff of the summer College of Irish in Clochaneely from 1907 to 1929, serving first as an instructor and later as secretary of the organization.  O'Toole held professorships at Castelknock College and at the Carmelite College, Terenure before becoming the Chair of Irish at Trinity College, Dublin in 1929.  He died in 1956.

Scope/Content:

The O'Toole papers are a collection formed from documents found in the books from Professor O'Toole's personal library which were purchased in 1956 for inclusion in the College of St. Thomas Celtic Library. Roughly one-half of O'Toole's library was purchased by the College.

Most of the materials in the collection are letters and scholarly papers O'Toole received from colleagues. One can find the autographs of a number of individuals prominent in Celtic Studies in the collection, including that of Douglas Hyde, first President of the Irish Republic.
