Biography: 

Matthew Schumacher was born in Chicago, IL on March 8, 1879.  He attended Notre Dame University and the Catholic University of America. 

He joined the Holy Cross Fathers religious order and was ordained December 19, 1903.  He was a professor of philosophy at Notre Dame from 1904 - 1919 and President of St. Edward's University in Texas from 1919 - 1925. 

When the Holy Cross Fathers took over the administration of the College of St. Thomas in 1928, Schumacher was appointed by the Holy Cross Fathers Council to head up the College. 
When the order's contract to run the school expired in 1933, Schumacher returned to South Bend, IN where he served as chaplain of St. Mary's College until is retirement in 1962.  He died in South Bend, IN in July 1966.

Scope and Content:

This collection contains correspondence and subject files from the years Schumacher was the President of St. Thomas, 1928-1933.  The files have scattered subjects and correspondents. The files document Schumacher’s efforts to improve the academic and athletic reputation of the College.
