How to Find Music in the Music Resource Center

Browse the shelves

We use the Library of Congress call number system, which organizes pieces by instrumentation and genre.  See the **Music Call Numbers** handout for more details, or contact MRC staff.

Search CLICnet, the online catalog

MRC scores, recordings, and reference materials are included in CLICnet.

Suggested searches:

  • Author
  • Title
  • Subject
  • Keyword (use a combination of author, title, and/or subject with Boolean "and" to pinpoint a search)

Suggested limits:

  • Material Type: Music scores; Music CDs; Videocassettes
  • Where item is located: St. Thomas - MRC

CLICnet tips

  • Check for alternate spellings of composers. See: Tschaikowski
  • Use the uniform title of a programmatic or foreign language title. Compare "symphonies" to "symphonien"
  • Beware when searching by location or collection. You may instead be excluding material you can request. Limit by location instead.

Can't find it in the MRC?

Make an online request from CLICnet (delivered in 1-2 business days) or present your ID card at any CLIC library. Some collections have restricted circulation

  • Borrow scores from Augsburg, Bethel, Concordia, Hamline, Macalaster, Northwestern, or St. Catherine.
  • Request CDs from Augsburg, Concordia or St. Catherine. Pickup CDs at Hamline or Macalaster (no delivery). Listen in-house at the other CLIC libraries.

Can't find it at a CLIC library?  Request a regional or national search by placing an Interlibrary loan request. These take a bit longer so please plan in advance. Ask MRC staff for assistance.
