Music Resource Center Mission Statement and Operational Guidelines

Mission Statement

The Music Resource Center (MRC), a department of the O'Shaughnessy-Frey Library, contains a collection of music scores, recordings and other audio-visual material, playback equipment, and instructional PC's. The primary functions of the MRC are to maintain the collection of study scores and listening materials required for the support of music courses taught at UST and to provide access to these materials to students enrolled in and faculty teaching these courses. The MRC fulfills these functions by having trained and knowledgeable staff, having useful hours of operation, keeping the collection in good shelf order and correctly checked-out, especially reserve materials, and maintaining equipment in good working condition.

Operational Guidelines

  1. As a part of the O'Shaughnessy-Frey Library, the MRC will conform to the mission and general policies of the Library. All circulation and reserve policies, including those pertaining to copyright, will be strictly followed. Any exceptions must be approved by the MRC supervisor.
  2. The MRC staff will be expected to have: -- a "good service" attitude and skill in interacting well with a variety of people -- a working knowledge of the collection: what is contained in it and where things are located -- the skills to successfully search CLICnet for music materials -- awareness of high-demand reserve items -- knowledge of how to correctly circulate items -- the ability to operate the playback equipment and do simple troubleshooting -- awareness of security issues (not leaving the area unattended, monitoring activity in the area)
  3. The MRC staff will be expected to assist patrons in the following ways: -- by helping patrons to determine whether or not the MRC holds a particular item and, if the MRC holds it, where that item is (checked out, on reserve, on the shelf, etc.). Questions or requests other than these are beyond the scope and mission of the MRC and will be referred to the O'Shaughnessy-Frey Library reference staff. Also, staff will not be expected to do the work for the patrons; however, staff will be expected to help if the patron is having difficulty -- by teaching patrons how to use CLICnet and Library of Congress call numbers -- by training patrons in the correct use of playback equipment -- by answering general directional and informational questions
  4. The facility will be open and adequately staffed during posted hours when the University is open.
