Storage/Medium Rare Policy

Accessing items in storage in O'Shaughnessy-Frey Library

Books transferred to Storage are kept in the designated section on Level .5 in O'Shaughnessy-Frey Library.  To access these items:

  • Patrons seeking these items should be directed to the Circulation Desk.
  • Circulation staff members are responsible for retrieving the items for the patron.
  • Books retrieved from Storage are to be checked out for 2 hours, in-house use only. Patrons must have a valid CLIC library ID. If they do not, they must produce some other standard form of identification which then must be left as a guarantee at the Circulation Desk. No interlibrary loan or holds are allowed.
  • When the item is returned to the Circulation Desk, Circulation staff members are responsible for examining the item to be sure that it has not been damaged or defaced. Any newly identified damage should be recorded with the date in a staff note in the item record in CLICnet. If damage can be linked to a specific patron, the usual library staff should be notified and the library's vandalism policy should be applied. After being examined, the items should be returned immediately to the Storage room.
  • In rare and exceptional cases, it may be possible for items to be checked out for a brief time and taken out of the building. However, permission must be obtained from either the Head of Special Collections or the Book Conservator first. Without this permission, items may not be taken out of the building.
