Library Night Security/Troubleshooter

Duties:

  • perform preventive maintenance on photocopiers, printers and micromachines; fix jams and keep stocked with paper
  • monitor supplies and report shortages
  • make hourly walk-throughs of entire building
  • assist with actual problems and remain alert to potential ones
  • assist ill and/or disabled patrons when necessary
  • assist at closing of library in clearing the building of patrons
  • carry and use radio to keep in communication with library night supervisor and UST Public Safety 
  • keep accurate and complete log of actions taken during shift
  • check O'Shaughnessy Room during rounds each hour -- count patrons in library each hour
  • make sure all windows throughout library are closed.

Required Skills:

  • must be reliable, honest, assertive, able to communicate well with students, library staff, Public Safety staff
  • maturity to know when to offer help and when to call for assistance from library staff and/or UST Public Safety

Difficulties that Exist in this Position:

  • may need to deal with verbal abuse from patrons unwilling to leave at closing time
  • responsibility for dealing with variety of problems throughout large and sometimes very crowded building
  • element of risk when patrolling unoccupied areas of library
  • continual need to keep machines in working order
  • may experience verbal abuse from patrons found to be vandalizing library materials

Days/Times:

Sunday-Thursday, 9 pm - 2 am.
