The Luann Dummer Center for Women is co-sponsoring two events for the International Day of the Girl on Friday, October 11th. The first is an informational panel and social gathering to take place in the center (OEC 103) from noon – 1:30 and will feature presentations by St. Thomas faculty and students regarding international efforts to empower girls in the education and health arenas.

The second event is scheduled for 6:00-8:30pm in the ASC dance hall, and will feature a screening of the film Girl Rising and presentations from community leaders who work in this area.

Representatives from organizations such as Books for Africa, Women's Initiative for Self-Empowerment, Girls Getting Ahead in Leadership, Girl Scouts, and Laura Jeffrey Academy will present.

Through these events, students, staff, faculty, and community members will have a chance to come together and discuss issues of women domestically and internationally. Panelists will touch on issues such as women in education and health as well as the empowerment of women both domestically and internationally including ways to address domestic/international violence. Panelists will also talk about programs that are out there and how individuals at UST and in the community can get involved. The LDCW is happy to welcome this event as it coincides with the theme of the center this year, “International Feminism and Diverse Women’s Life Stories.”

The cosponsors for these events are: Foreign Affairs Club, Luann Dummer Center, FemCom, Modern and Classical Languages, Political Science, and International Studies.
