Tyner,-ArtikaArtika Tyner, Ed.D., M.P.P., J.D., has been awarded a contract from the American Bar Association that will allow for her book, “Leading for Change: The Lawyer’s Guide to Planting People and Growing Justice,” to be published by the ABA in 2014.

In the book, Tyner, who serves as director of diversity and a clinical faculty member with the University of St. Thomas School of Law, explores the role of lawyer as leader and agent of social change. It combines theoretical frameworks of social justice lawyering, leadership and public policy.

“This book is a valuable contribution to the field of leadership and legal education since it focuses on how lawyers can develop core leadership competencies and apply practical strategies for building and sustaining social change,” Tyner said.

An attorney, educator, writer and community advocate, Tyner teaches law students to be engineers of social change by utilizing creative problem-solving approaches, building bridges between communities and policy makers, and creating access to justice. As a scholar, she has sought innovation in teaching social justice lawyering, aiding law students in cultivating their leadership capabilities, exploring contemporary civil rights issues and implementing alternative dispute resolution techniques, including restorative justice and mediation.
