Thirty-eight students were sworn or affirmed into certified student practice Aug. 23 by the Honorable LaJune Lange as part of the recent Interprofessional Center for Counseling and Legal Services Swearing In/Affirmation Ceremony.
The ceremony is a formal marker for clinic students as they assume responsibility for clients and advocacy work. The event was conceived as a reminder to students of their obligations to the profession. The commitments made by the students link them to generations of attorneys who have gone before them.
Under the guidance of the center’s faculty and fellows, law students working and learning in the Legal Services Clinic represent and assist underserved populations of the Twin Cities. With extensive client interaction, the center provides unparalleled opportunities for experiential learning. Student connection to clients is deep, and the work is often intense. Through their work, students develop a distinctive link to the community that is in harmony with the University of St. Thomas mission.
