Prolife Center to sponsor Aug. 1 lunch and dinner events on HHS mandate/religious liberty

Published on: Saturday, July 13, 2013

The Prolife Center at the University of St. Thomas School of Law is holding two events on Thursday, Aug. 1 on the topic of the federal HHS mandate and its impact on religious liberty.

The Center is sponsoring a CLE/Lunch titled "Religious Liberty v. HHS Mandate" that takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the School of Law on the Minneapolis campus. Featured speakers for the event include:

-        Attorney Erick Kaardal, who will discuss four Minnesota lawsuits challenging the HHS requirement that business owners must provide employees with insurance coverage for contraception and abortion-inducing drugs.

-        Greg Hall, a Catholic deacon in Houston, who owns American Manufacturing Company, based in St. Joseph, Minn. Hall will discuss his federal suit claiming the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ contraception mandate violates his religious freedom. American Manufacturing Company, which manufactures mining equipment, captured worldwide attention for its role in helping rescue 33 trapped Chilean miners in 2010.

-        Professor Teresa Collett will moderate the discussion.

Cost for the event, which is open to the public and includes lunch, is $25 per person.  This course has been submitted for approval by the Minnesota State Board of Continuing Legal Education for 1.5 hours of standard continuing legal education.

Later that evening the Prolife Center is holding a "Dinner and Update on Religious Liberty vs. HHS Mandate," from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Binz Refectory West Dining Room on the UST St. Paul campus. This event, which costs $50 and includes dinner ($25 for full-time students and clergy) is open to the public. Kaardal and Hall are featured speakers.

This event is co-sponsored by the Prolife Center at UST Law and the Respect Life Office of the Archdiocese of St. Paul - Minneapolis.
