JD Compass: New Initiative to Support Employment Efforts of Recent Graduates

Published on: Monday, July 29, 2013

The Career and Professional Development Office has launched JD Compass, a new initiative designed to individually support the employment efforts of each graduate of the class of 2013 who is still seeking full-time, long-term employment.

In addition to the CPD services available to all alumni, JD Compass pairs each graduate who is working to secure long-term, full-time employment with a Career Strategist to support his or her unique employment efforts and goals for one year. Each Career Strategist will provide services for:
• Vocational discernment and evaluation of diverse professional opportunities
• Development of application materials, including resumes, cover letters and writing samples
• Identification of job openings and job watch
• Feedback on job strategy
• Support for networking and advanced professional outreach and development
• Utilization of social media for professional connections, job openings and personal brand development
• Review of electronic identity
• Mock interviews and interview strategies

While graduates will continue to be self-directed and take initiative in their career search, the Career Strategists will walk beside them, providing encouragement, asking the sometimes tough questions, and ensuring that the job seekers' feet are always in motion. The Career Strategists will work hand-in-hand with (and out of) the CPD office. The goal is to ensure that UST Law graduates have the help they need, when they need it, said Kendra Brodin, Director for Career and Professional Development.

“The JD Compass program will provide significant, individualized job search and professional development support for every recent graduate who is still seeking legal employment after law school graduation," Brodin said. "Our goal is to help every graduate of UST Law move into meaningful employment as quickly as possible following law school graduation, and the JD Compass program allows us to devote much more time to the specific needs of each graduate by matching each graduate with a Career Strategist. As we look for newer and better ways to support our graduates, the JD Compass program is an exciting initiative that we believe will yield tremendous results for our most recent alumni.”

Brodin along with Assistant Director Monica Gould, several faculty members and the following alumni will serve as Career Strategists:
• Adam Brown ('06) - Staff Attorney, Minnesota Workers' Compensation Court of Appeals
• Jenny Weigel ('08) - Web Analyst/Performance Engineer, FindLaw, a Thomson Reuters business; and UST Law adjunct legal writing professor
• Pam Steinle ('11) - Associate, Bassford Remele
• Frank Aba-Onu ('10) - Assistant Attorney General, Office of the Minnesota Attorney General
