Human Rights Awards Banquet: Native American Law and the Maze of Injustice

Wednesday, April 9, 2008, 12:30-1:30 in the UST-Law Atrium Amnesty International UST - Law will host the Fourth Annual Human Rights Award Banquet.  AI – UST Law welcomes keynote speaker Sarah Deer of the Tribal Law and Policy Institute.  Ms. Deer will discuss her work on Amnesty International’s “Maze of Injustice” report.   The Maze of Injustice report addresses the complex overlap of jurisdictional authority among tribal, state and federal governments and the resulting loopholes that have surfaced which essentially permit perpetrators of sexual violence to commit violent crimes against indigenous women with alarming impunity.  For a copy of this report please visit http://www.amnestyusa.org/women/maze/report.pdf.

The event will honor one student and one community member for their contribution to the advancement of human rights.  The 2008 recipients are Shawn Stuckey, a UST 3L, and Ahmed Sirleaf, Program Associate at The Advocates for Human Rights and Staff Member at Community Mediation Services.

The winner of the 2008 50/50 raffle will also be announced.  Raffle tickets will be on sale before the event.  One hundred percent of the proceeds will go towards the 2008 Amnesty International – UST Law Human Rights Summer Fellowship.  If you are interested in purchasing raffle tickets please contact Meghan McCauley at mhmccauley@stthomas.edu.

The event will take place in the Schulze Grand Atrium at the University of St. Thomas School of Law, 1100 LaSalle Avenue in downtown Minneapolis from 12:30-1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 9.  Lunch will be served.  The event is open to the public and free of charge, though donations to support the summer 2008 human rights fellowship are welcomed.  Please RVSP to lawrsvp@stthomas.edu and put “Amnesty” in the subject line.
