The University of St. Thomas School of Law Journal will host its annual fall symposium on September 25, 2008. The focus of the symposium will be human trafficking. Panelists and keynote speakers will gather to explore this problem, study legal approaches, and discuss solutions.
The program begins with registration and breakfast at 8:30 a.m. in the lobby of the lower level lobby of Opus Hall, across the skyway from the School of Law building located in downtown Minneapolis. The program will start at 9 a.m.
The symposium will host two key note speakers during the day. The first is Mark Kappelhoff, the Chief of the Criminal Section of the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. Kappelhoff supervises and manages Department of Justice attorneys involved in the investigation and prosecution of federal criminal civil rights violations, including bias-motivated hate crimes, human trafficking and law enforcement misconduct. Prior to holding this position, Kappelhoff served as a Deputy Chief and Trial Attorney in the Section.
Also delivering a keynote address is Norma Ramos, Co-Executive Director, Coalition Against Trafficking in Women. The Coalition Against Trafficking in Women (CATW) is a non-governmental organization that works internationally to combat sexual exploitation in all its forms, especially prostitution and trafficking in women and children. Ramos has been a leader in fighting for the rights of women. A lawyer by training, Ramos has led many efforts and appeared in the national spotlight on programs like Charlie Rose.
The symposium will also include three panels scheduled through the day: U.S. Human Trafficking Laws: Challenges in Interpretation and Application; Human Trafficking Victims: a Host of Unresolved Issues; and Global Dynamics of Human Trafficking.
The public is invited and encouraged to attend. The cost of the symposium is $25.00, which includes lunch and CLE credits that are being applied for. For more information call 651-962-4830 or register at the website www.stthomas.edu/law/rsvp.
