Negotiation Team Wins

University of St. Thomas School of Law negotiation team advances to nationals

The team of Susan Kuhl and John Wittig advanced to the The American Bar Association Law Student Division's National Negotiation Competition with a second place finish at the Region seven competition held at the William Mitchell College of Law on November 10. Region seven includes Law Schools from Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska and Manitoba.  In addition to Kuhl and Wittig’s achievement, the team of Erin Collins and Scott Nelson placed eighth among the sixteen teams representing eight law schools.

The competition is intended to promote greater interest among law students in legal negotiation and provides a means for them to practice and improve their negotiating skills.  The competition simulates legal negotiations in which law students, acting as lawyers, negotiate a series of legal problems.  The simulations consist of a common set of facts known by all participants and confidential information known only to the participants representing a particular side.  All of the simulations deal with the same general topic, but the negotiation varies with each round and level of competition.  The rounds are adjudicated by practicing attorneys, judges and law school faculty.

Since its first entry into the  negotiations competition four years ago, University of St. Thomas Students have advanced to the National Competition three times.  This year’s national finals will take place in Los Angeles, California on February 8 and 9 in conjunction with the ABA Midwinter convention.
