Dean Thomas Mengler has announced two new staff appointments for the School of Law - Dave Bateson, previous Director of Mentor Externship, as Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Artika Tyner as Interim Director of Diversity.

In his new role, Dave Bateson will work to advance the School of Law’s mission and vision as it relates to students, student life, and student services.  He will serve as the primary advocate for law students, student government and student organizations, and he plans to work with these groups to enhance the professional development and leadership of its leaders and members.

Dave Bateson has served as Director of Mentor Externship for the past 6 years and has helped propel the School of Law’s mentor externship program into a national leader.  In his announcement to students, faculty, and staff, Dean Tom Mengler stated, “It is accurate to say that Dave Bateson has become this country’s leading expert on law school mentoring programs.  I am impressed with Dave’s fine track record in working effectively and sensitively with our law student community, as well as his success in doing the same with our 500 mentors – leaders in the Twin Cities legal community.”  Prior to joining the University of St. Thomas School of Law in 2005 he practiced as an attorney with Rider Bennett in Minneapolis, MN.

As the Interim Director of Diversity, Artika Tyner will be responsible for developing and implementing a variety of initiatives to advance a strategic and integrated approach to diversity in all aspects of student life at the School of Law.  She will continue her role as chair of the Committee on Multicultural Affairs and lead the committee’s efforts in strengthening the diversity, the multicultural awareness, and the inclusive nature of the law school community as guided by its mission of faith, service, and community.
