Published on: Thursday, February 3, 2011

2005 UST Law Alumnus, Mike Hanson, who lost his sight at birth, spent seven months hiking the Appalachian Trail last year.  Hanson was able to navigate his way through the trail by following precise voice instructions over his cell phone, programmed from a hand-held GPS unit. Upon his return to St. Louis Park, MN, he now faces his next challenge - becoming a CEO.

Hanson's goal of conquering the Appalachian Trail to give demonstration to the independence that visually impaired people can achieve with the aid of adaptive technology was accomplished  - his most recent challenge is becoming CEO of a start-up company that will provide real-time navigation to persons with visual impairments.  His story is featured in the Star Tribune 2/2/2011 article, "Proving his point. Blind hiker Mike Hanson demonstrated grit and independence on the Appalachian Trail -- and earned a CEO position as a result.," which is available at: http://www.startribune.com/local/west/114846184.html?elr=KArksUUUoDEy3LGDiO7aiU
