The University of St. Thomas School of Law, as a Catholic law school, is dedicated to integrating faith and reason in the search for truth through a focus on morality and social justice. Each year the school recognizes graduates who exemplify "living the mission" through his or her professional and civic activities. This year, Victoria Jacobson Brenner (’04) and Brooke Swenson (’07) were awarded the 2010 Living the Mission – Alumni Award. Other nominees included Andrea Specht (’06), Bryan Feldhaus (’06), and Christopher Nelson (’07).
Victoria Jacobson Brenner, a member of the inaugural class of University of St. Thomas School of Law, is an associate at Collins, Buckley, Sauntry and Haugh, PLLP in Saint Paul. Victoria works tirelessly to serve the commumnity and the profession. She was named by Minnesota Lawyer as a 2010 Up & Coming Attorney. Victoria is a volunteer attorney for Hennepin County Family Court's Limited Legal Service Program and also a volunteer with Chrysalis. Victoria is a member of the 2009-2010 Minnesota Justice Foundation Board and is the Chair of the MJF Fundraising Committee. In addition, Victoria is a co-chair of the Ramsey County Bar Association (RCBA) Family Law Bar, is a member of the RCBA Nominating Committee, and is a member of the MSBA Professionalism Committee.
Brooke Swenson, a 2007 graduate, an associate in the firm of Briggs and Morgan, P.A. She is a member of the Business Litigation Section. Since law school, Brooke is very active in the community. Brooke provides pro bono assistance to low-income clients of SMRLS and VLN in the areas of housing and debt collection. Brooke was the recipient of the Briggs and Morgan 2008 Associate Award for Outstanding Pro Bono Services. The award stemmed from a case in which Brooke assisted a woman to keep her home. The case was recently affirmed by the Minnesota Court of Appeals. Brooke is now providing pro bono assistance to SMERLS and the Mayo Clinic by assisting clients in immigration interviews.
Brooke is a member of the Volunteer Lawyers Network (VLN), for which she is chair of the Fund-Raising Committee and serves on the Board of Directors. Brooke is also a member of the Minnesota Bar Association (MSBA) and was active in its Women in the Legal Profession Committee. Brooke is also a member of Minnesota Women Lawyers (MWL), where she serves as co-chair of the organization’s Program Committee and is active in the MWL strategic planning task forces.
Victoria and Brooke are not only living the mission in the legal community. Both law graduates serve the UST Law Community in vital ways. Victoria and Brooke currently serve on the Alumni Board. Both began serving on the Board in 2008. Brooke is currently the Alumni Board Secretary-Treasurer and is in the leadership track to serve in two years as the Alumni Board President and as a representative on the Law Board of Governors. Victoria serves as an Alumni Board Liaison to the MJF Student Chapter at St. Thomas and is a member of the UST-MJF Public Interest Fellowship Grant Selection Committee. Brooke serves as an Alumni Board Liaison to the School of Law’s Curriculm Committee.
