Jeff Storms (’06), partner at Gaskins Bennett Birrell Schupp LLP, wrote a screenplay, "Throwing Gasolina," which was selected as one of the “Elite Eight” for the LA All Sports Film Festival in November. The screenplay also is a quarterfinalist in the Chicago Screenwriters Network competition.
In 1930s Cuba, Francisco Bellan is a baseball star. His attempt to play professional baseball in America is thwarted by the racism underlying baseball's color barrier. Once rejected from American ball, he manages to find love and a simpler life, but he never relinquishes his dream of American baseball glory. Francisco gets an opportunity to play in the Negro Leagues, but his ability to succeed in baseball and love is undermined by his entanglement with Jewish mobster, Benno 'Safe Bet' Fein.
Jeff will learn later in October if his screenplay advances to the finals of the Chicago competition. Congratulations, Jeff!
