The University of St. Thomas School of Law Journal will host its annual fall symposium on October 1, 2009. From the perspective of the twenty-year anniversary of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill, the Law Journal has assembled experts to discuss the role of rights and remedies in the judicial system.

Experts include a cross section of individuals who have studied the Exxon Valdez case specifically, and individuals who can apply the lessons of the disaster to a broader legal framework.

The symposium will host two keynote speakers: Doug Rendleman and Catherine Sharkey.

Doug Rendleman is the Robert E. R. Huntley Professor of Law at the Washington & Lee School of Law. He is the author of Cases and Materials on Remedies and a noted Remedies scholar.

Catherine Sharkey is a Professor of Law at New York University School of Law. She has written extensively on the subject of damages. In a pioneering 2003 article, she described a new category of damages, compensatory societal damages.

In addition, the symposium will feature two presentations: The impact of the Exxon Valdez oil spill on the ecology of Prince William Sound and Litigation and the Psychosocial Impacts of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill, followed by a Q&A session with the presenters. There will also be three panel presentations: The legal and practical consequences of the Exxon Valdez oil spill; The future of punitive damages in American Law; and The Exxon Valdez: Justice Achieved or Justice Denied?

There is no cost for students to attend. The symposium fee is $10 to attend (no CLE credit), or $40 to obtain CLE credits. For more information call 651-962-4855 or register at the website www.stthomas.edu/law/rsvp.
