Comprising four floors and the majority of one wing of the School of Law, the Schoenecker Law Library serves as the intellectual heart of the School of Law. A mixture of formal and informal study spaces provides students, faculty, staff and others in the legal community comfortable surroundings while working with information resources from an ever-expanding print, electronic and microform collection.
The Schoenecker Law Library provides 380 seats in group study rooms, carrels and tables. Seating in the 12 spacious group-study rooms accounts for 25 percent of the total seating capacity. These rooms highlight the School of Law's commitment to collaborative learning. With the exception of approximately 50 casual chairs clustered in areas on all floors, all study spaces are hard-wired for network connectivity.
The library contains an informal reading room where students can peruse current newspapers and magazines, relax with a game of chess or checkers, or plug their laptops into a network connection to check e-mail, complete an assignment, or access printers in the adjacent reference area. In the reference area, students and faculty can consult with members of the public services staff about research needs or explore the reference collection.
Surrounding the reference area are two group study rooms, a computer-assisted legal research (CALR) room housing computers and printers for LexisNexis and Westlaw, and a computer teaching lab. Students are provided unlimited access to LexisNexis, Westlaw and many other electronic databases.
The majority of the library's print collection is shelved on the lower level and on the third floor. Compact shelving on the lower level contains a significant periodical collection. The microform room on this floor contains a substantial microform collection in a room capable of holding 250,000 volume equivalents. The third floor also contains the library's American, foreign, international and comparative law collection. The growing print collection emphasizes federal and state law, including a comprehensive collection of statutes, case law and regulations.
If the physical library is the heart of a law building, the library staff are the soul. School of Law Library staff are committed to providing the highest level of service. Experienced law librarians are an integral part of the first-year Lawyering Skills program, providing instruction on the location and use of legal information. Law librarians also provide support on research methodology throughout the curriculum. Additional services include an online catalog, reference and research assistance, interlibrary loan and document delivery.
The Schoenecker Law Library is named in honor of Guy and Barbara Schoenecker who, through their generosity, are recognized as founders of this faith-based law school. Guy Schoenecker, an alumnus of St. Thomas, is the founder, chairman and chief executive officer of BI and a longtime trustee of the University of St. Thomas. The Schoeneckers' gift was the first major gift to the School of Law.
