Adjunct Faculty, Vice President of Claims at Minnesota Lawyers Mutual Insurance Company

Timothy J. Gephart, CPCU, has served as Vice President of Claims at Minnesota Lawyers Mutual Insurance Company since 1985. He is an adjunct professor at the University of St. Thomas School of Law, where he teaches a course on legal malpractice. Gephart served two three year terms on the Minnesota Lawyers Professional Responsibility Board and two three year terms on the Minnesota State Board of Legal Certification, and was recently appointed to the Minnesota Board on Judicial Standards. He is a past chair of the National Ethics Committee for the Society of Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters and of the National Association of Bar Related Insurance Companies Claim Education Committee. He is a member of the Minnesota State Bar Association (MSBA) Life and the Law Committee and was a recipient of the 2003 MSBA President’s Award as a member of the task force on the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct. Gephart is a frequent lecturer and has authored a number of articles on the topics of ethics and risk management for lawyers.

| Description of course 761 : | This course explores legal malpractice law, policy, and problems. In addition to studying the civil liability claims and defenses, the course will cover approaches to managing risk and avoiding malpractice claims. This course is designed to enable students to learn the law and policy related to the professional liability of lawyers; to expose students to legal malpractice issues encountered by practicing lawyers and malpractice experts; to enable students to identify and prevent common malpractice traps; to give each student an opportunity to explore malpractice problems that s/he will encounter in a particular practice area; and to provide a survey of malpractice issues encountered by lawyers in a range of practice areas. | |||
